Your Prescription Matters, But It May Not Tell the Whole Story

You pick up your new glasses, put them on, and something feels a little off. The numbers are right. The lab did its job. So why don’t they feel right?

For many people, a prescription is the whole answer. The numbers go to the lab, the glasses come back, and life goes on. But if you’ve ever struggled with a new pair, you already know a prescription is only part of the picture.

Why the Numbers Are Only the Start

Your prescription describes how your eyes focus light. It doesn’t describe how you spend your day. Two people with the same numbers can need very different glasses if one reads sheet music on a stand and the other spends eight hours between two computer monitors.

That difference becomes even more noticeable once you’re over 40, when reading, screens, and everything in between start asking more of your lenses.

What Our Opticians Look At

At Chadwick Low Vision Center, your visit starts with a conversation. We’ll ask about how you use your vision throughout the day, and we’ll consider:

  • The lighting and glare you encounter, indoors and out
  • The different distances you use for reading, screens, hobbies, and other daily activities
  • How your eyes move and work together
  • Your current glasses and visual aids, including what is and isn’t working

Small Changes That Make a Big Difference

A different lens design, material, tint, prism, frame, or combination of solutions can sometimes change how your glasses feel. That might mean a specialty bifocal set up for a workbench or a music stand, a tint chosen for light sensitivity, or a frame modified to fit a unique facial asymmetry.

Because our lab is steps away, we can create and fine-tune everything from everyday prescription glasses to highly specialized, task-specific eyewear.

When a Closer Look May Help

It may be worth a visit if:

  • Your current glasses help, but not enough
  • You notice eye strain or discomfort with your glasses
  • Images seem to be different sizes or positions between your eyes, or your vision simply feels “off”
  • You have a hobby, job, or task your current glasses don’t support

Bring the glasses that aren’t working and tell us when they let you down. That’s usually where the answer starts. Learn more about Specialty Opticianry.
